Drivers are facing five-mile queues - latest updates

. Two lanes have been blocked on the southbound carriageway between junctions 26 at Orrell and 25 at Bryn.

Queues are currently tailing back towards junction 27 for Standish. In a post on Twitter, a spokesperson for North West Motorway Police wrote: "We are taking reports of an RTC on the M6 Southbound between J26 and J25 patrols en route." A further tweet added: "Avoid the Southbound M6 from Orrell traffic is very heavy." The incident was first reported after 7.30am this morning , according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system.Two lanes of the motorway have since been opened. Further details about the nature of the incident are not currently known.

Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service have been approached for comment.
