Car owners in Melbourne’s outer southwestern suburbs have been falling victim to thieves stealing valuable items from their vehicles — all because they are making one simple mistake. Since February, 75 alleged car thieves have been arrested in Wyndham, and items including credit cards, laptops, cash, handbags and an $8000 watch have been taken. Not only have police been shocked that residents leave valuables in their cars, but they say most of the vehicles targeted were not locked.
has been released of a number of the alleged thefts. It shows that in some instances offenders become deterred and move on if the car is locked. But in one video, a man broke into an unlocked Mitsubishi and stole two power banks and keys to three separate properties. In another, an Apple Macbook, hard drive and $500 cash were taken from an unlocked BMW. Police data has revealed a huge 63 per cent of the vehicles broken into across Wyndham in May were unlocked.
