Toll charges are in place on the Birkenhead and Wallasey tunnels
Some have slammed the Mersey Tunnel tolls as “absolutely ridiculous” but others regard them as a "sad necessity".
Mr McGoldrick, 77, from Greasby, said: “Almost half of the money they pay on the tolls goes as profits to the combined authority. They're very secretive about it. They make it almost impossible to find out how much profit they're making. "Millions are spent on operating and maintenance each year, with these costs rising as the tunnels age - the Queensway will celebrate its 90th birthday next year, whilst the Kingsway has been in operation for 52 years now. Both are major pieces of infrastructure that are vital for the city region’s economy and society as a whole.
"The expenditure and income from the Mersey Tunnels is detailed annually in the Merseytravel Statement of Accounts, which are published on the Combined Authority website." Others cited the fact that a city such as London has multiple options to cross the river without paying a toll. Currently, the Dartford Crossing is the only toll road within the capital.
However, others cited the longevity of the tolls as proof that it was not worth trying to abolish them. One said: “Whilst I fully agree with him and commend him, surely he's realised by now that the tunnel toll is going nowhere?”
