A two-mile stretch of Highway 231 is receiving additions. It’s a facelift drivers have mixed emotions about.

The Alabama Department of Transportation’s “ Access Management Project ” is said to reduce conflicts on the road. The city of Troy is growing and the highway is heavily trafficked. Being a main way to get to Dothan and the beach, Troy Police Chief Danny Barron said the road needs changes for safety.

“We had to do something for the safety of our citizens and the safety of the people who are traveling through,” said Barron. Barron says there has been more accidents on Highway 231 with most restaurants in town surrounding the four lane highway. The $2.7 million ALDOT project has already added raised concrete islands, new turning lanes, and median U-turn bulbs. Right now, the construction is causing more traffic, and some drivers say the new additions are adding to the congestion, too.Gibson says the traffic also impacting her delivery times. But others in the community have mixed emotions about the project. One person online said it’s unnecessary and will cause more chaos and danger. Others say it will do the opposite. “If you have been to Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, they have done the same work down there and it seems to work down there,” said Barron. While construction is underway, drivers need to slow down and expect road closures. If you are caught speeding or injure a construction worker, expect a bigger penalty than a regular speeding ticket.“ALDOT’s design of this project incorporated a thorough review of crash history and traffic volume within the corridor. The project is designed to significantly reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and decrease travel times. By substantially reducing conflict points, it will also lessen the potential for severe injury and fatal crashes. This project reflects the success of many similar access management initiatives across the state, which have consistently led to improved traffic flow, reduced travel times, and increased safety.Victim in Sunday afternoon Montgomery shooting identified‘There is over a foot of feces’: Estimated 100 animals found in unacceptable living conditionsLos Angeles mayor imposes curfew on downtown following increased nighttime violence
