Officers from four different police agencies Saturday night could not keep up with the car's 'Scat Pack' engine, capable of speeds up to 174 mph.
Christine Vendel | cvendel@pennlive.com Officers arrested a 21-year-old man after a high-speed chase Saturday night that spanned about 11 miles across Dauphin County and ended with the suspect smashing into a Penbrook police SUV, according to police.
The pursuit started with an officer in Steelton and later involved officers from at least three additional police agencies who could not keep up with the suspect, who was driving a 2017 Dodge Challenger withIt’s unclear why Steelton police originally tried to pull over the driver at 11:23 p.m., but they lost him shortly after the driver got onto Interstate 83 and discontinued their pursuit near the Bass Pro Shops, according to police. Four minutes later, a Lower Paxton police officer on a ramp to Interstate 83 saw the speeding Challenger go by, but by the time the officer called in the sighting and tried to pursue for “felony eluding,” the car was gone, said Police Chief Adam Kosheba. “He never saw the car again,” Kosheba said, adding that video footage from police cars showed the car was traveling at dangerously high speeds. Pennsyvlania State police tried to assist and spotted the Challenger on I-83 near Jonestown Road. They continued the pursuit until Interstate 81 and North Progress Avenue but gave up after losing sight of the car near Progress and Elmerton Avenue, Kosheba said. Susqhehanna Township police rolled a set of spike strips across Progress Avenue in the 300 block, a device designed to gradually deflate tires after contact, but it’s unclear if the suspect’s tires were damaged by the spikes, Kosheba said. The car continued southbound where a Penbrook officer was preparing to standby in case the suspect drove past on Walnut Street. As the officer was pulling into a parking lot in the 2900 block of Walnut Street to wait, the Challenger appeared and suddenly slammed into the rear of his Chevrolet Tahoe, destroying the vehicle, Kosheba said. The officer sustained minor injuries. Police arrested the suspected driver, who sustained serious injuries, not far from the scene. Three other occupants fled, Kosheba said. Lower Paxton police charged Giovanni N. Tribble with aggravated assault, eluding police, leaving the scene of a crash and reckless driving. He remained in a hospital Monday night from his injuries.
