A driver led Austin police on a high-speed chase through a protest demonstration on North Lamar Boulevard, narrowly avoiding pedestrians and vehicles before finally being apprehended.
At approximately 4:17 p.m., APD Officers Cavazos and Serrata responded to a protest in the 9500 block of North Lamar Boulevard, where demonstrators reportedly blocked traffic and ignited fireworks. Officers on scene observed a white 2007 Cadillac performing 'donuts' in the intersection of Rutland Drive and North Lamar Boulevard. The driver, later identified as Jose Rebollar, fled the scene when officers attempted a traffic stop.
Despite police activating emergency lights and sirens, Rebollar continued driving through a crowded shopping center parking lot at 9717 North Lamar. Officers reported that the suspect narrowly avoided hitting pedestrians and vehicles as he maneuvered through the lot before turning onto Rundberg Lane. Rebollar continued to evade police, leading them through multiple side streets while also briefly driving on a sidewalk near North Lamar, where several pedestrians were present. Officers attempted multiple low-speed intervention tactics to stop the vehicle, but the suspect continued fleeing until he was ultimately forced to stop in a congested parking lot due to heavy traffic and a parked vehicle blocking his path. Rebollar was accompanied by a female passenger. He was subsequently arrested and booked into Travis County Jail on charges of Evading in a Motor Vehicle and Reckless Driving.
