Matthews pleaded guilty in May to aggravated vehicular homicide, a third-degree felony, and failure to stop after the scene of an accident, a fourth-degree felony. He faced a maximum sentence of more than six years in prison. Detectives picked up the car’s license plate and tracked Matthews down nearly a week later and arrested him.

He left his longtime job teaching at a law school in the United Kingdom for a similar position at Florida State University so he could be closer to his family, and potentially start one of his own.
