By Anchorage Daily NewsA driver was found dead Tuesday after authorities responded to a report that a vehicle was in the Anchor River on the southern Kenai Peninsula, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Troopers were notified around 7:45 a.m. of a vehicle that was upside down in the river near Mile 161 of the Sterling Highway, between Anchor Point and Homer, the agency said in an. When troopers arrived at the scene, they found the adult driver dead inside the vehicle, troopers said. The agency determined that the vehicle had been traveling north on the highway early Tuesday morning when it left the road, striking a guardrail and “eventually rolling into the river” around 1:15 a.m., troopers wrote. The driver’s body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner Office, and troopers said the person’s identity would be released once a positive identification is made and the person’s next of kin have been notified. Troopers said the Sterling Highway was intermittently closed for about two hours while they and recovery crews investigated the crash and recovered the vehicle from the river.
