Now, authorities are investigating whether the man behind the wheel was under the influence.

"He's an 11-year veteran. He's a fighter thankfully he will be OK," said Superintendant Timothy Bernhardt, with the Upper Darby Police Department.The officer, who is part of the highway patrol division, was hit when the driver of a red pickup truck failed to stop at a stop sign, according to police. "We believe that the male that hit him was operating the vehicle under controlled substance. Our Accident Investigation team is working that case and we do anticipate charging that male later on today, with at minimum DUI," Bernhardt said.The 46-year-old driver of this striking vehicle is now in custody. However, video allegedly shows him trying to flee the scene.

"He walked up to the officer, saw it was an officer and then ran back to his truck, so we believe he was trying to leave," Bernhardt said.The officer is expected to make a full recovery.
