EL SOBRANTE — A passenger in a van died last week after a crash that ended with the driver under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol said.Driver thought to have fled San Jose crash is found dead at home 2 days later
The fatal wreck happened Aug. 15 at about 1:15 p.m. on eastbound Appian Way, just west of La Paloma Road, according to a statement from the CHP they they released Monday. The CHP said the passenger who died was a man but did not identify anything else about him. Inquiries to the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office about the man’s identity were not returned immediately Monday afternoon.
The driver went by ambulance to a hospital with minor injuries, then was arrested on suspicion of DUI, the CHP said. According to the CHP, the driver was behind the wheel of a white Chevrolet Astro Van going east on Appian and recklessly speeding past other cars as it approached the intersection at La Paloma Road. The CHP said the van sideswiped three vehicles and hit a trailer, all of which were parked on the right shoulder.The CHP is still investigating and asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at [email protected] or 925-646-4980.
