Driver, 80, strikes and seriously injures bicyclist in Torrey Highlands [Breaking]
An SUV driver exiting a freeway struck and seriously injured a bicyclist Wednesday evening in the Torrey Highlands area of San Diego, police said.
It happened about 5:25 p.m. near the bottom of the exit from east state Route 56 to Camino Del Sur, in a crossing for the SR-56 Bike Trail, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said. The driver, an 80-year-old man behind the wheel of a Volvo XC90 SUV, was turning right from the freeway exit onto Camino Del Sur when he struck the bicyclist, Buttle said. The rider was in a crosswalk dedicated to a protected bike trail.
The victim, a 57-year-old woman, sustained serious injuries that included fractures of her pelvis and fifth lumbar vertebrae, Buttle said. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
