President Joe Biden touted his administration's effort to remove 'every poisonous lead pipe' in American households during his speech at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People National Convention on Tuesday afternoon in Las Vegas.
Biden delivered the keynote address at the convention. Among topics discussed included the economy, with Biden focusing on helping Black families purchase homes, eliminate debt and ensure their access to clean water.In 2023, the EPA released data that shows Florida as having the most lead service lines in the country at 1.16 million lines, according to a report by U.S. News. Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and New York also have a higher percentage of lead lines. A Natural Resources Defense Council survey in 2021 revealed that lead is still found in up to 12.8 million service lines, impacting approximately 22 million people.'We're removing, which is costly, every poisonous lead pipe in a house in America, so every child can drink clean water without fear of brain damage,' Biden said to smattering applause.Biden is still celebrating the plan two months after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced an additional $3 billion from Biden's Investing in America agenda to aid states and territories in identifying and replacing lead service lines. The project aims to prevent exposure to lead in drinking water.'Lead can cause a range of serious health impacts, including irreversible harm to brain development in children,' the EPA announcement said. 'To protect children and families, President Biden has committed to replacing every lead pipe in the country.'Newsweek reached out to the EPA by email for comment.According to the EPA, lead exposure disproportionately impacts people of color and low-income families. The EPA's Lead Service Line Replacement Drinking Water EPA's Lead Service Line Replacement Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program is expected to replace up to 1.7 million lead pipes nationwide.'The science is clear, there is no safe level of lead exposure, and the primary source of harmful exposure in drinking water is through lead pipes,' EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said in the press release. 'President Biden understands it is critical to identify and remove lead pipes as quickly as possible, and he has secured significant resources for states and territories to accelerate the permanent removal of dangerous lead pipes once and for all.'Lead is especially dangerous to children. Children face a higher risk of lead poisoning if they live in houses built before 1978 or in older homes undergoing renovation, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Lead also can be found in some pottery and ceramic ware, some hobby equipment, or some cosmetics.
