Brunswick's Trey Drexler sets up the offense before a 3-point shot Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, against St. Vincent-St. Mary during the Scholastic Play By Play Classic in Euclid. Drexler scored 36 points to lead a 55-49 victory.
EUCLID, Ohio — It could have been the shoes, but Brunswick senior point guard Trey Drexler has done this too many times. Down early Sunday afternoon at the Scholastic Play By Play Classic, the point guard put on a scoring bonanza in his Nike Buzz Lightyear shoes by scoring 36 points and leading the Blue Devils past St. Vincent-St. Mary for a 55-49 win at Euclid High School’s Harold “Doc” Daugherty Gymnasium. “Right before the season, I bought two pairs,” he said of the shoes, which have a mix of green and purple to match the Disney character. “They were on sale, so I was like, ‘I want to try them out.’”Drexler, an IU Indianapolis recruit, rallied the eighth-ranked Blue Devils back within three points by the end of the first quarter. They took a five-point lead into halftime and committed only one turnover — which came in the final 20 seconds — in the third quarter against an often inescapable pressing defense from the Fighting Irish. “They’re going to turn you over and they’re going to rebound the ball,” Brunswick coach Joe Mackey said. “They’re just extremely athletic. They’re long and they work at it. When I saw them play this summer at Midwest Live, they were relentless with their pressure.” Yet Brunswick committed only four turnovers in the first half, then its one in the third quarter. Mackey credited his point guard. “People talk about his ability to score, his pull-up jumper, but I think one of the best things about Trey is that you can’t press him,” Mackey said. “He just handles pressure so easily, whether they bring one guy at him or two guys at him.” Drexler scored 32 of Brunswick’s 44 points through three quarters. He also clinched their victory with four free throws after STVM cut the Blue Devils’ lead to two in the final minute. DeCarlo Prince led the Irish rally, scoring 18 points with 11 rebounds. Drexler was Brunswick’s only double-digit scorer, as Sean Barnett added eight points and nine rebounds in the third of five games played Sunday at Euclid. The Falcons withstood an early charge from the showcase hosts, who got a big slam dunk early from 6-foot-7 senior forward Kye Owens and used their pressing defense against Northeast Ohio’s No. 1-ranked team. Dylan Zeigler knocked down five 3-pointers and scored 27 points as part of Lutheran East’s response. The Falcons took control by the end of the first quarter, as freshman forward Bryce Irby hit a buzzer-beating 3 in front of the Euclid bench. Junior guard Ty Harrison picked up his play in the second quarter and finished with 12 points to help the Falcons pull away. Owens led Euclid with 24 points and seven rebounds. D.J. Jenkins, who played for Lutheran East last year, added 14 points. Lutheran East played only six players for much of the game. Irby scored 10 points, as did senior forward Ocho Davis. South Carolina recruit Marcus Johnson scored 26 points in three quarters, and the Bulldogs cruised past their long-time rivals. Dejuan Fuentes paced Shaker with 15 points off the bench, while Jacire Eaddy had nine. Sophomore Dillon Vaden-Slaughter and Kingston Seals each added eight. In addition to Johnson’s effort, which saw him reach 2,000 career points in the second quarter, Garfield Heights got two 11-point nights from freshman guard Jayvontae Swift and junior Antonio Jones. Senior forward Zachariah Belcher added 10 points with nine rebounds.Theo Castro’s putback while being fouled in the final 11.1 seconds of the fourth quarter helped Glenville clinch its rematch of last season’s Division IV state semifinals with Hawken in the day’s second game. Castro dished out eight assists to spur a rally after the Hawks, who lost to the Tarblooders last year in Canton, opened the third quarter with a 16-point run. Arvell Nelson scored a game-high 21 points Sunday, while Jahi Hobson added 14. Castro and Lorenzo Smith each scored 11 points. Greg Price paced Hawken with 16 points, while Da’Ron Hill had 15 points. Sophomore guard Ice Taylor and senior forward Charlie Mallett each scored 12 points for Hawken . Down six points to start the fourth quarter, the Longhorns rallied to snap a three-game losing streak in gritty style to Sunday’s opener of the Play By Play Classic. Aiden Monroe led Lutheran West with 22 points, while Chase Kuszmaul added 14 points, including the go-ahead basket off an assist by senior guard Jordan Custis. Ultimately, Custis clinched Lutheran West’s win by hustling down an offensive rebound on a second missed free throw by one of his teammates in the final seconds. Coach Jordan Duke called timeout while Custis had possession on the floor with 0.1 seconds left. Tristian Story led Rhodes with 15 points and six rebounds, while Darnell Jones added 13 points and six boards. Point guard Jahavi Dye added 11 points and five assists, while Jeremyah Brown came off the bench to provide eight rebounds.Matt Goul has covered high school sports with some college and pros sprinkled in since 2005 with a bachelor's degree from Kent State University.
