Coach Scott Drew's pep talk to the Kansas State Wildcats after their recent loss to Baylor offers a glimmer of hope for the struggling team.
Kansas State's recent performance has left fans and coaches alike feeling disheartened, particularly after a six-game losing streak culminated in a loss to Baylor. Coach Jerome Tang , despite his persistent messages of optimism, must be grappling with the team's struggles. However, a glimmer of hope emerged in the form of an encouraging visit from Baylor coach Scott Drew , a former colleague of Tang's for nearly two decades.
After Wednesday night's defeat, Drew went into Kansas State's locker room and offered words of support to the Wildcats. 'He told the guys just keep fighting, keep believing,' Tang shared in a postgame interview. 'He told them about the time we started the conference 2-8, and everybody had given up on us. But then we finished the conference 9-9, won three games in the Big 12 Tournament, and went to the Sweet 16.' Drew drew upon a past experience with the Baylor Bears during the 2013-14 season, a season that mirrored the Wildcats' current predicament. The Bears stumbled significantly after facing Big 12 opponents, their postseason aspirations seemingly fading with an initial 2-8 conference record. Yet, the team experienced a remarkable resurgence, winning 10 of their last 12 games and eventually reaching the Sweet Sixteen, a feat that seemed unimaginable during their early conference struggles. Tang sees parallels between Baylor's turnaround and the potential path for Kansas State. 'This thing can turn,' Tang stated. 'You just have to believe and keep fighting. We're healthy physically, mentally and spiritually. Our guys got a lot of fight in them.' The Wildcats have a chance to demonstrate their resilience against West Virginia (13-5, 4-3 in Big 12) on Saturday night.
