For the past two decades, the executive-as-deity attitude has permeated the sport. But David Stearns comes to New York in a different time
is so steeped in expectation that it might be near impossible. Ironically, what will determine Stearns’ success in the end will probably not be his choices, but those of his boss, Steve Cohen.
It is probably literally impossible for anyone to be as far ahead of the pack as Billy Beane was with the A’s two decades ago. In today’s game, Billy Beane does not exist. Neither does Theo Epstein circa the same period, or any of the early efficiency-and-analytics movers you want to name. You’ll always hear claims about the latest and greatest, but you don’t get to invent the internet twice.
“I do a lot of due diligence at my hedge fund. I’ve never seen such universal congratulations, saying, ‘You gotta hire this guy,’” Cohen said Monday at the outset of Stearns’ introductory press conference.“I also want to dispel any notion that there’s any magic formula to this, that there are shortcuts or there’s a secret sauce, there isn’t,” Stearns volunteered in his opening remarks. “There aren’t certainties in baseball. There are no guarantees of results.
So the question for Stearns might ultimately be: What standard is enough for Cohen? Is it Friedman-esque or bust? What if Stearns isn’t the best of the best, but say, still pretty darn good, will the juice have been worth the squeeze? Does Cohen ultimately listen to what Stearns advises, and is he patient with Stearns, particularly if there are early struggles?
