The night was defined by drama, high-level shot-making and one of the wildest finishes to a high school basketball game in Alaska history.After back-to-back years of finishing as runner-up to Grace Christian, Barrow finally overcame the Grizzlies in the semifinals of this year’s tournament, and completed their long journey back to the 3A girls mountaintop with a tight win over Monroe. Aiga Unutoa and Kylen Burnell had 16 points each to pace the Whalers, who took the title for the fifth time in school history and the first time since 2022.In the night’s defining matchup and an instant classic in the annals of Alaskan high school sports, Mt. Edgecumbe and Barrow dueled to the tune of three overtimes and nearly 200 combined points. Despite a 46-point explosion from Barrow superstar Alex Fruean and several critical errors in crunch time, the Braves, led by Guy Goldsberry’s 26 points, overcame multiple towering deficits to outlast the Whalers and win their first boys basketball state championship in school history.After a two-year hiatus, 2026 saw the return of Mountain City Christian Academy’s title-winning ways. Led by the Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year in girls basketball Keelie Kronberger, the Lions overcame a feisty Bartlett squad to win its seventh title in nine years, and its first since renaming from Anchorage Christian School.Even when faced with a red-hot South Anchorage team fresh off upending the bracket’s top overall seed the day prior, Grace Christian wasn’t fazed, and the Grizzlies ran away from the Wolverines late to win their first state title since 2017.
