With DragonBallSuperSuperHero premiering this week, we broke down Gohan & Piccolo's character arcs with voice actors Kyle Herbert and Christopher Sabat:
The upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie instantly set itself apart from most of the franchise's other movies by putting its focus on Gohan and Piccolo. Now with the iconic duo getting the spotlight like never before, fans of Gohan and Piccolo have every reason to be excited for this new movie.
To better understand these two iconic characters and their role in Super Hero, Screen Rant sat down to talk with their English voice actors Kyle Herbert and Chris Sabat. Kyle Herbert: Oh, it's the P man. It's all about the P man. Yeah, it truly is. Piccolo has been there in ways that Goku never has. And Goku obviously very much loves his kid, obviously. You could never take that away from him.
Kyle Herbert: It seems to me that time has progressed. Gohan is, is busy with his studies, he's doing his thing. Videl is a busy mom. And Piccolo spends his days sort of meditating. So they take advantage of Piccolo's very open work-from-home schedule to look after Pan, at times when they can't pick her up from school. I've noticed a lot of things in the film that kind of implied that they really lean on Piccolo quite a bit to pick up Pan from school or to babysit.
And to have something that's going to mean a lot to fans or maybe strike other fans in a way that they didn't expect. It's like "Well, hey, these guys are my favorite characters, but wow, this is so cool to see these guys get that sort of attention." And I think also this movie does a great job with the ensemble. Yeah, it's one thing to say "Oh yeah, this is Piccolo's story or this is Gohan's story. This is them front and center.
You've both played these characters for a good amount of time. So how has your performance and your understanding of the characters evolved over the course of that time? But over the years, because we've had an opportunity with Dragon Ball Z Kai and the video games, to kind of go back and explore these characters over and over and over again. Each time we do that, we learn more about it, and we learn more about the kind of pure elements of it. We've gotten to hear our characters do things, again and again, to where we really begin to understand things slowly as it goes along.
