A drag queen storytime scheduled in March was canceled by a bomb threat, and some municipalities ended or cut library funding over the issue.
It was a night for sassy drag queen performances and some bawdy storytelling, but also for expressions of gratitude for community support in the wake of awas filled with supportive citizens, Groff fans, his childhood friends, theater folk who have performed with him on local stages and his middle school drama teacher, Sue Fisher.
“It means so much to me to be here tonight, standing in front of you as an out and proud gay man, raised right here in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,” an emotional Groff said.Jonathan Groff accepts the award for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical for "Merrily We Roll Along" during the 77th Tony Awards on Sunday, June 16, 2024, in New York.
“They broke down the thick wall of prejudice and homophobia I had in my mind and in heart,” Groff said. “The simple act of witnessing these mentors and friends be who they are in the day-to-day moments of life added up over time and ultimately helped free me to be the person I am today.” “Thank you, Lancaster, for planting the seeds for me, not only as an artist, but more importantly for who I have become as a person,” he said.
