“While I am moving on from my current positions, I am not retiring,” Fauci said in a statement. “After more than 50 years of government service, I plan to pursue the next phase of my career.'
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the high-profile medical official that’s led the nation’s COVID-19 efforts under the Trump and Biden administrations, is stepping down.
In a statement, Fauci, longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said he is leaving to “pursue the next phase of my career.” “While I am moving on from my current positions, I am not retiring,” Fauci said in a statement. “After more than 50 years of government service, I plan to pursue the next phase of my career while I still have so much energy and passion for my field. I want to use what I have learned as NIAID Director to continue to advance science and public health and to inspire and mentor the next generation of scientific leaders as they help prepare the world to face future infectious disease threats.
Fauci has served as NIAID director for 38 years, serving under seven presidents and working on U.S. response to a range of threats including HIV/AIDS, West Nile virus, Ebola and Zika, and COVID-19. Fauci, 81, said he has no plans to retire but will continue to work “career while I still have so much energy and passion for my field.”
