Doctors avoid going to see doctors. It’s like a mechanic taking his car to another mechanic (Even if I’d wanted to see him, I’d have never got the time off work. To be honest, I’m surprised I had the time to catch chlamydia) 🖊️ amateuradam

It’s fairly understandable how doctors end up like this – at medical school, you learn about a doctor called Archie Cochrane. While serving in the British Army in Crete in 1941, he got captured by the Nazis and found himself in a prisoner-of-war camp where they appointed him chief medical officer and put him in charge of the hospital.

And so, unable to actually treat his patients, Cochrane just documented their symptoms and monitored their progress, realising in the process that, at least as far as doctors were concerned, the Nazis may have had a point. It seemed that doctors really were, if not exactly superfluous, then at least far less necessary than previously imagined.was published in 1972 and was hugely influential in advocating for randomised trials when testing treatments.

And when you qualify as a doctor, there’s a culture of just… pretending you’re fine. You go to work when you’re ill, with almost no upper limit of how ill, because otherwise you’ll be letting down your. Besides, at one hospital I worked at, you were responsible for arranging your own cover if you were sick, then paying the person back with another shift, so it was easier just to limp or wheeze into work.

As if my medical training wasn’t enough to encourage me away from phoning the GP, I can also blame my parents. Growing up, every single emergency was handled in-house by my doctor dad. Everything from concussions to gaping wounds . I’m pretty sure I managed my entire school career without so much as an hour off sick.
