The NWS is urging people not to go into the county's mountains Friday and Saturday to see the snow because the storm could produce whiteout conditions.
Dozens of motorists got stuck on westbound Interstate 8 between Sunrise Highway and Buckman Springs Road Thursday morning due to black ice on the roadway and required the assistance of snow plows to clear a safe path, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials said there were three snow plows working the area but said they couldn’t keep up with the snow, which fell to the 2,000-foot level overnight.Motorists began calling CHP dispatchers around 9:15 a.m. to report being stuck on westbound Interstate 8 near the Pine Valley checkpoint, which is about a mile east of Sunrise Highway and west of Buckman Springs Road.“There are two or three snow plows out there, but they can’t keep up because it is just snowing too much.
The conditions were produced by an extremely cold Canadian storm that left parts of Mount Laguna covered in 13 inches of snow by early Thursday. Palomar Mountain got about 10 inches.
