The fire originated in the rear area of the house, but firefighters have not yet determined the cause, the chief said.
There were no injuries, but authorities were unable to account for a family pet, after a fire gutted a two-story house in Hawthorn Woods Tuesday afternoon. The Robin Crest Road residence was destroyed by the blaze, which was reported around 4 p.m. No one was home at the time the fire broke out, Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Chief David Pilgard said Wednesday.
Firefighters were on the scene within four minutes of receiving the call, but they arrived to find the blaze had already gone through the roof of the house. Pilgard said crews saw a plume of smoke on their way to the fire. Extinguishing the fire was difficult because there are no hydrants in the area, he said. Water had to be brought in by tankers and water tenders, Pilgard said.
