A norovirus outbreak along one of America’s most iconic hiking routes has left dozens of people sick, showing just how quickly this type of illness can spread in remote outdoor environments with limited sanitation.
According to local news outlet, SFGate, an outbreak of the highly contagious virus emerged early this month along a stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail , a 2,650-mile route stretching from Mexico to Canada, near Wrightwood, inAt least seven cases have been confirmed by medical professionals after hikers sought treatment in nearby towns. One of the victims, 73-year-old hiker Ron Hals, told SFGate that he’d"never been that weak," adding that within the space of an hour, he was struggling to stand up.
Before that, Hals had walked over 370 miles over the last few weeks and was feeling strong. While the exact source of the outbreak hasn’t been confirmed yet, early signs point to a shared water cache in the Wrightwood area—specifically, the Swarthout Valley between Cajon Pass and Mount Baden-Powell—as a possible source of contamination. Norovirus is also difficult to control. Unlike many viruses, it can’t be reliably killed by hand sanitizer, making soap-and-water hygiene essential.

The CDC says that norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States and one of the most common causes of gastrointestinal illness overall.
