Two friends recently died within a month at South Woods State Prison, but their families don't know what happened.

“For me, it’s still hard to move forward. Each and every day, I think of my son. Each and every day, I miss my son. Each and every day, I ask the question, ‘What happened?’” Ferguson said. “I’m still left with unanswered questions.”Shawn Malcolm was serving a 30-year-sentence for murder when he met Terrance Ingraham, who was doing 45 years for armed robbery. Malcolm had been incarcerated since 2004, Ingraham since 2008.

As they often did when something happened to Malcolm or Ingraham, the families called each other after Terrance’s death. The medical examiner must provide a cause and manner of death, but that can take six to 12 weeks or longer, depending on the office conducting the autopsy. Families can’t bury their loved ones without a death certificate. So, they wait, hoping for answers.

Malcolm’s relatives said he had major surgery related to his kidney last year. They recently said he had an infection that caused his right arm to swell and his right middle finger to “deteriorate,” sending him to the hospital in mid-January.was recently experiencing excruciating headaches, and was on a long list of medications.
