A group of seven downtown businesses has filed a claim against the city of San Diego, seeking $2.5 million in damages related to the deepening homeless crisis they say has decimated their livelihoods. The businesses want San Diego officials to clean out the encampments in their neighborhood or they will consider taking the city to court.

in city parks, riverbeds, waterways, trolley stops and other transportation hubs as well as within two blocks of existing shelters or schools. Each entity listed a “statement of damages” that totals $2.5 million for losses in property value, profit and rent that the businesses say they have had to shoulder. The claim also estimated future costs at $820,000, bringing projected damages to more than $3.3 million by next year.

“Even though we pay the city more than $120,000 in property taxes,” Capri Enterprises USA said in the filing, “we feel alone in our fight to keep our building fronts clear of loitering homeless, which deter tenants, customers and visitors from entering our building and their offices.” Capri Enterprises said one of its tenants was punched in the face earlier this year and a janitor was threatened with a knife.
