The side of her shop in downtown McKinney had been vandalized.
In just 40 hours she covered the wall with sun rays, an armadillo, native Texas wildflowers and her signature: a bird.That was in spring of 2020. Now, 20 murals and hand-painted signs in downtown McKinney are marked with her name. Small-business owners say the art helps attract customers to their shops and restaurants, especially the ones that are located off the main square — the bright colors draw in curious people who otherwise might not have walked down the street.
Birds got her an in. The windows got her recognition. Other business owners started hiring Holmes to paint their window panes. During the pandemic, Holmes used her brushes to paint positive messages on the windows, hoping to bring color and joy to the shuttered downtown. Now, her work has become a staple of downtown and helps display the culture of the area, said Onel Perez, who owns a Cuban restaurant on South Chestnut Street.Attracting customers to small businesses
Holmes works alongside the business owners to understand their stories to create a mural that both encompasses their backgrounds and her artistic style.
