A missing 15-minute parking sign outside a downtown Harrisburg cafe is raising concerns among nearby businesses that rely on quick stops and foot traffic. Wake and Bake Cafe on State Street recently lost its free 15-minute parking sign out front.
The business, which just celebrated one year in Harrisburg, had been given the short-term parking space, but the owners were told last week the sign would be taken away. When crews returned to the cafe, the signs were gone. The cafe has not received official notice explaining why, according to the report. The situation has neighboring businesses along Second Street worried the same thing could happen to them, and some said losing short-term parking could directly affect them as well.
“You need one of those to survive otherwise you lose your business,” said Don, the owner of True Value. “ I would really be complaining about that," he added, when asked if his sign were taken away. Mohamed, a manager at Adam 2 Convenient store, said losing the short-term parking would discourage customers from making quick purchases.
“Of course it will hurt, people are gonna start thinking, oh, I don’t want to go buy something and get a ticket more than what I spent, you know? So they need to keep that or do another solution,” he said. Businesses along the Second Street strip said removing 15-minute parking signs would hurt an already struggling restaurant row and surrounding shops, and could make quick stops more expensive for customers.
Metropolis' Market Street office said "no comment" and a corporate email address was provided. Questions sent by email included why the sign was taken away and who approved it, but no response had been received.
“Parking authority have to do what they do because if they just keep it like this people will park anywhere," Mohamed said but believes communication and a solution are needed.
