Thunderstorms with heavy rains and tornadoes rattled the Chicago area and elsewhere in the Midwest.

The weather service reported a wind gust of 75 mph at O’Hare International Airport at 9:51 p.m., with several other sites seeing winds in the 50 to 70 mph range. Their office even had to seek shelter, he said. After spending the night with his daughter in Elmwood Park, Zinanni said he’s focused on repairs. Many of his neighbors were impacted as well, he said, with trees knocking down a chimney and breaking stucco.
The Metra Electric Line, in particular, experienced delays Tuesday morning from storm damage, according to spokesperson Meg Thomas-Reile. A “significant portion” of the line lost power, trees and other debris blocked tracks at some locations and the wind damaged some wires, Thomas-Reile said. She said delays would likely continue into the evening rush hour.
Nearly 390,000 customers were left without power in northern Illinois alone, according to poweroutage.us.
