There is the myth that the Americas were discovered by Europeans and their conquest was by military might. The Americas were already inhabited, and the two continents were a maze of well-travelled roads, canoe routes and trade routes.

The foundation was the Two Row Wampum. This compact between the Haudenosaunee represented by the Mohawk Nation and the Dutch allowed the Dutch to settle on Manhattan Island and live in peace with the original inhabitants. This understanding was reflected in their final agreement. The Dutch were prepared to write out an agreement but the Mohawk insisted an agreement written on paper would not be permanent and would be lost.
