Today we still follow the old rhythms of life with summer powwows and family reunions, and gather to share information andThis week I’m in Winnipeg at the annual treaty gathering. This event happens annually but it isn’t advertised, nor is a media statement released afterwards. It’s an internal gathering and its location and dates are circulated by word of mouth. Last year the gathering was held on the Enoch First Nation outside of Edmonton.
Treaties 1 to 11 occupy an area that comprises about half of Canada. Treaty 9 stretches across northern Ontario from the border of Quebec and Treaty 11 covers the Mackenzie Valley all the way to the Beaufort Sea. There were, however, a number of chiefs in attendance who spoke in favour of the work being done for policy development.
