All-steel and big power are the highlights of Doug Cline’s 200-mph classic Camaro.
Editor’s Note: HOT ROD is celebrating the 20th running of Drag Week by looking back in the event’s history books. One of the most prestigious honors is to be inducted into theStreet Car Shootout. We’re talking about the early '90s, when the biggest weekend of the year was on the famed Memphis dragstrip in October. There was magic that hung in the air, and the cars that filled the staging lanes weren’t thinly veiled Pro Mods.
The crowd in 2014 was highly focused on Jeff Lutz and Larry Larson, especially because it was the first public appearance for Larson’s newYet, lurking behind them was Cline and his innocent-looking, factory-appearing Camaro, ready to unleash the fury on the field. The opening day at Tulsa Raceway Park in Oklahoma netted him a best of 6.84 at 211 mph. It was the second-quickest run of the day, sitting behind Lutz and his lightweight “Evil Twin” 1957 Chevy.
The entry into the 200-mph club occurred on the second day at Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, Kansas. Cline pushed his first-gen Camaro to a 6.964 elapsed time, which was coupled with a 206.58-mph speed. He was immediately welcomed into the club when he turned in the fifth timeslip on Friday.The entire week was magical for Cline; his goal was to run 6s at every stop, and he did so, finishing with 6.8722 and 210.570-mph averages.
