“I thought I heard his voice and was like, ‘Is that him? I don’t know,’” Sully said.

The pair of siblings having this midair meeting was actually the result of a well-concocted plan, with Lawson telling the Navy that the two were coordinating flights from their own units just to get this chance meeting in the sky. “That morning was kind of stressful because we didn’t know if our plane was going to work,” Sully said. “Then the weather became an issue, so we didn’t know if we would be able to take off on time.
While in the air, Sully Brakefield couldn’t quite recognize her brother’s voice in the radio back and forth due to everyone sounding the same over the coms.Luckily, a comment Lawson made about a recent injury Sully sustained a month earlier eased any doubts that the two weren’t right next to each other in the air.
