Michelle Mann A Dothan man serving a 40-year prison sentence for robbery has been now charged with murder in connection with the 1997 shooting death of Vernon Stuart North during a robbery.
Dothan police investigators arrested Conrad in February 2014 on an armed robbery charge in connection with the June 9, 1997, theft of a pistol and a rifle belonging to North. According to a Dothan Eagle report at the time, police said the robbery charge came as a result of a police interview with Conrad in connection to an unrelated theft investigation.
Owens said Conrad’s statements included specific details of the crime that could only be known to a person intimately involved in the crime. “Conrad admitted to taking part in the robbery of North which ultimately ended in North’s death,” Owens said. After the sentencing, attorney Thomas Smith, who represented Conrad in court, told the court his client now wanted to withdraw his guilty plea, according to Dothan Eagle reports. Smith said his client believed the court had said something at an earlier guilty plea hearing indicating that he would receive a 16-year prison term. Moulton said he would take the defense request under advisement.
