JON JOHNSON AND DAVID MUNDEE Dothan Eagle Sports Writers MONTGOMERY – Dothan High lost for the second time on the road in as many weeks – this time 50-28 to Carver of Montgomery – as the Wolves fell to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in Class 7A, Region 2.
The Wolverines returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, but the Wolves came back to tie it at 7-7 when AJ Alexander scored on a 1-yard run. After a Carver TD pass made it 14-7 in the final minute of the first quarter, a Dothan fumble was recovered by Carver’s Kalib Spivey and returned 42 yards for a score to make it 21-7 early in the second quarter.Dothan starting quarterback Sam Broadaway was injured in the first half and didn’t return after intermission. Alexander pulled Dothan within 28-21 early in the third quarter on a 71-yard run, but Carver answered with a touchdown to go up 34-21. The extra point try was missed. People are also reading… A 23-yard touchdown pass from Alexander to Daniel George cut the lead to 34-28 with 7:01 left in the third quarter before Carver put it away with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Central-Phenix City 53, Enterprise 24In Enterprise, the Wildcats hung tough much of the first half against the No. 1-ranked team in Class 7A before the Red Devils ran away with it in the second half. Central improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Class 7A, Region 2, while Enterprise is now 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the region. Central sprinted out to a 21-0 lead, but Enterprise got on the scoreboard when Mac Houston connected with Cates Blackmon on a 7-yard touchdown pass. The TD was set up on a 69-yard kickoff return by Max Faught. Jose Rocha kicked through the extra point to cut the lead to 21-7. The Wildcats pulled even closer when Houston threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Blackmon and Rocha made the PAT to make it 21-14 in the second quarter. But Central recorded a safety, followed by an 8-play, 52-yard touchdown drive and recorded yet another safety right before halftime to make it 32-14 at the break. Rocha kicked through a 33-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to trim the lead to 32-17 before Central scored two TDs in the third quarter to make it 46-17. Enterprise scored on a 9-play, 80-yard drive when Bradon Cook took it in from 7 yards out before Central scored a final tally. Ariton 36, G.W. Long 13The Purple Cats, ranked No. 5 in Class 2A, remained unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the region with the road victory. Wells Ganey had 14 carries for 72 yards and two touchdowns and Addison Senn had 10 carries for 29 yards and two scores. Jacarrie Hammock had 53 yards rushing on 11 attempts. With 8:05 to play in the game, Gabe Jones picked up a fumble and carried it 5 yards into the end zone for a touchdown. Senn was 11-of-18 passing for 173 yards. Easton Kilpatrick caught two passes for 48 yards and Ganey caught two for 40. Hayes Hammock caught one pass for 39 yards. Ariton recorded a safety near the end of the third quarter when a punt by Senn of 61 yards backed G.W. Long up inside its 5 and the very next play Barrett Silavent and Jones combined to make a tackle for a safety. Jones and Ganey each had eight tackles, while Brodie Lowery and Parker Wimberly each had seven, Tate Kilcrease six and Silavent five. Eufaula 52, Carroll 14 In Ozark, the Eagles opened the scoring and trailed only 22-7 at halftime before the Tigers dominated the final two quarters. Eufaula improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Class 5A, Region 2, while Carroll dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the region. The Eagles opened the scoring with 6:15 left in the first quarter when quarterback Holden Pawlik connected with Devon Pruitt on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Cam Buchanan added the extra point to give Carroll a 7-0 lead. Eufaula answered early in the second quarter as Jayden Howard powered in from one yard out. Fernando Salas’ extra point tied the game at 7-7. Just minutes later, the Tigers took the lead on a 9-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful two-point conversion to make it 15-7. Eufaula struck again with 3:30 left in the half when quarterback Jaylin Wright found Howard on a 7-yard touchdown pass. Salas’ kick made it 22-7, which held as the halftime score. The Tigers wasted no time extending their advantage in the second half. Wright connected with Howard for a 35-yard touchdown pass just 15 seconds into the third quarter, pushing the lead to 29-7. Wright later added an 8-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds left in the quarter to make it 36-7. Eufaula’s defense then forced a safety when a Carroll punt snap sailed out of the end zone, increasing the margin to 38-7. The Tigers tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter — a 5-yard run at the 9:05 mark and a 29-yard run just 14 seconds later — to push the lead to 52-7. Carroll showed fight late, as Pawlik connected with Jaylen Stuckey on a short touchdown pass with 5:40 left. Buchanan’s extra point closed out the scoring.Headland improved to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in region play. Montgomery Catholic 35, Charles Henderson 21 The Trojans fall in their first home game of the season, losing to Montgomery Catholic 35-21.Ashford 34, Pike County 14Two Ashford scores in the final minute of the first half helped the Yellow Jackets break away and handle Pike County on Friday night. Leading 20-7, quarterback Zay Johnson threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Zi Walker with 52 seconds left in the first half. Johnson then snatched a well-executed onside kick out of the air to give Ashford the ball inside Pile County territory. After two unsuccessful plays, it appeared Ashford was content to take the three-score lead into the half with a simple quarterback run to the right. That’s when Johnson reversed field and used one block to break into the open field for a 47-yard score on the last play of the half to make it 34-7.Pike County scored in the first half on a 34-yard pass from Cornelius Griffin to Braylin Jackson and added a 2-yard run by A’Zhoree Eutsey in the middle of the fourth quarter. Ashford improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Class 4A, Region 2, while Pike County is now 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the region. Dale County 13, New Brockton 6Junior Smith deflected a pass on the game’s final play to preserve Dale County’s 13-9 win over New Brockton in a Class 4A, Region 2 game in Midland City.For Dale County, Aaron Beasley threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Smith and Kam Cotton returned a fumble 41 yards for a touchdown for the other Warrior score. Smith finished with seven tackles, including three quarterback sacks. Stacy Atkins and Jordan Owens also had seven tackles. Cody Jaggars had two interceptions. Dale County improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in region play, while New Brockton dropped to 3-2 and 1-2. Opp 48, Daleville 24The Bobcats, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A, improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the region with the win. Talan Wicker was 6-of-6 passing for 75 yards and threw two touchdown passes to DJ Hines of 12 and 27 yards. Hines caught five passes for 70 yards. Matthew Morgan had eight carries for 91 yards and had a 5-yard touchdown run, Brandyn Washington had seven carries for 60 yards and had scoring runs of 9 and 11 yards and Saban Sasser had a 20-yard touchdown run.Brantley 36, Elba 34Elba scored in the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie it but failed on a two-point conversion in dropping a 36-34 decision to the Bulldogs. The Tigers started strong, going up 21-6 at the end of the first quarter. Brantley, however, bounced back for a 22-21 halftime lead. The Bulldogs led 38-28 after three quarters. For Elba, Reggie Gilbert returned a kickoff 82 yards four a touchdown and also scored on a 22-yard TD pass and a 14-yard run. Tyceson Davis earned 162 yards on 18 carries with TD runs of 10 and 31 yards.Trinity 42, Slocomb 6The Redtops trailed only 15-0 at halftime before the visiting Wildcats pulled away in the second half. Hayes Hatton caught a touchdown pass from Weston Sasser for Slocomb, which fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in Class 3A, Region 2. Montgomery Academy 62, Northside Methodist 6Kingston Whaley rushed for a touchdown for the Knights’ score in the loss to No. 7 ranked Montgomery Academy.Montgomery Academy moved to 5-0 and 3-0. Abbeville 48, Houston County 6Abbeville earned its first win of the season after four straight losses and gave coach Robin Tyra his first win in his second tenure at the school. Kendrick Carter accounted for three touchdowns for the Yellowjackets, including two rushing. Xavier Harris rushed for a touchdown and threw two touchdown passes, one to Carter and one to Alec Spann. Jamarion Smith added a rushing touchdown.Cole Joyner and Brody Cook both rushed for a touchdown for the Rebels and Kevonte Lee caught a touchdown pass from Elijah Holmes.Goshen 45, Highland Home 20Goshen scored 24 fourth-quarter points to pull away from the Flying Squadron in the Class 2A, Region 3 game. The Eagles led 21-6 at halftime but Highland Home scored twice in the third quarter to cut the margin to a single point.RB Allen scored on a 1-yard run, Grant Taylor on a 2-yard run and Zekayden Vincent on a 2-yard run, while Zion Picatoste boomed a 36-yard field goal for the Eagles in the final quarter. Pike Liberal Arts 48, Barbour County 16Jack Baggett accounted for four touchdowns – two off interception returns and two rushing – to help the Patriots in the Class 2A, Region 3 win. With 16 points, Barbour County scored its most points in a game in three years going back to a 2022 game when the Jaguars scored 19 against Goshen. Barbour County’s two scores came on a 21-yard pass from Reaquan Hill to Jaquavious Stewart and a 5-yard pass from Hill to Johnson. Michael Blackmon Jr. and Johnson scored on two-point conversions. Baggett returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown for the first score with Finn Duncan adding a two-point conversion. Baggett scored on a 2-yard run with seven seconds left in the first quarter to make it 14-0, capitalizing on a onsides kick recovery by Will Scott. Barbour County closed the gap to 14-8 before the Patriots scored three times before halftime off a Dutch Adams 65-yard TD pass to Jackson Bowen, a Baggett 36-yard interception return for a touchdown and a Baggett 7-yard run to go up 36-8. The Jaguars scored in the third quarter to cut the margin to 36-16 before Pike Lib scored on an Adams 1-yard TD run and a Tyler Whatley 20-yard scoring run. Adams finished the game with 107 passing yards. Whatley led the rushing attack with 74 yards and a touchdown on just five carries. Baggett followed with 58 yards and two scores. Defensively for the Patriots, Nathan Jefcoat had seven tackles and JD Vaughan and Braden Shirely had five each. Abbeville Christian 58, Morgan Academy 34Abbeville Christian stayed unbeaten, improving to 5-0 with a victory over Morgan Academy of Selma at James W. Rane Stadium. After allowing an early Morgan Academy score, the Generals surged to a lead they never relinquished in the non-region victory. Ahmod Billins threw a 60-yard TD pass to Jayden Buckhannon and an ensuing two-point conversion put ACA up 8-6. Billins scored on a 6-yard run and passed to Shi Crawford on a 2-point conversion to make it 16-6 with 21 seconds left in the first quarter.Billins completed 8-of-10 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns and added 103 yards on six carries with two TDs. Riddge Crawford rushed for 208 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries. Buckhannon caught seven passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns.The Panthers fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in region play.The Chiefs fell to 0-4 with the non-region loss. Early County 45, Terrell County 12The Bobcats rushed for 439 yards and five touchdowns in routing Terrell County. Early County improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in region play as it prepares for next week’s showdown with rival Seminole County. DJ Lee rushed for 142 yards and two scores on 10 carries, Kobe Lingo for 108 and two TDs off seven carries and Evan Grist had 55 yards and one touchdown on five carries. Jaylen Mays added 45 yards and a TD on four carries.Mays scored on 23-yard run in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. In the second quarter, Grist scored on a 31-yard run, Lee on a 49-yard run and Chandler Means returned a fumble 45 yards as Early County went up 24-0 at halftime after failing on all four two-point attempts. In the second half, Lingo scored on a 31-yard run, a two-point conversion and a 45-yard run and Lee scored on a 21-yard run in the second half. Orlando Rafael Hernandez converted one extra-point attempt. Defensively, Early County had nine quarterback sacks and a handful of other tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Rakeevian Lee was in on nine tackles with two sacks and two other tackles for loss, Means had eight tackles with three QB sacks plus a tackle for a loss plus the fumble return for TD. Jimmyan Jones had six tackles with three QB sacks, a caused fumble and another tackle for a loss. DJ Lee had seven tackles with one sack and two other tackles for loss. Rodrigo Polacios had six tackles with one QB sack and one other tackle for a loss.
