Dothan had a program-record five individuals qualify for next week’s state tournament in Huntsville and scored its most points in a section postseason meet.
DAVID MUNDEE Though they didn’t have a champion or a runner-up, the Dothan Wolves boys wrestling team still set a new standard at this past weekend’s South Super Section Tournament.
The five individuals who qualified were Jaylon Ward, Cooper Hall, Malcolm White, Cole Motzenbecker and Jordan Bighems. Hall became Dothan’s first three-time state qualifier, while Ward and Motzenbecker qualified for a second straight year. White and Bighems qualified for the first time. Hall, at 126 pounds, received a bye before losing to Enterprise’s Paxton Hanshaw 17-7 despite taking a 7-0 lead in the first period. The Dothan wrestler rebounded with first-period pins over Opelika’s John Ambrocio and Alma Bryant’s Jamison Hunnings before losing in the consolation semifinals to Prattville’s Luke Dudley by fall . Hall, though, won the fifth-place match with quick 27 second pin over Mary G. Montgomery’s Jackson Grant.
Bighems qualified by finishing sixth in the 190-pound weight class. He lost his opener by fall to Prattville’s Will Daniel before winning two matches – 15-10 over Alma Bryant’s Walker Connely and 10-8 over Smiths Station’s Tavien Williams—before losing a rematch to Prattville’s Daniel in the consolation semifinals. Bighems then lost the sixth-place match to Robertsdale’s Hunter Williams by fall .
