It's a college football player's paradise, where dreams and reality meet in new EA Sports video game
DAVID MUNDEE After watching the Dothan Diamond Boys 14U all-stars in practice for more than a month and also earn five straight wins at the state tournament, head coach Jonathan Smith has a confident feeling about the team entering the Diamond Boys Baseball World Series.
People are also reading… The Dothan squad earned the World Series trip by winning the Alabama state title June 28-30 in Greenville, clinching the crown with a 14-2 win over the Andalusia-based AA Arrows. Earlier in the tournament, the all-star team beat Southern 12-0, the AA Arrows 5-0, Greenville 4-3 and Troy 6-4.
If the Dothan all-stars play similar ball at the World Series, Smith feels they could be playing on Tuesday in the finals.In the state opener, William Mitchell and Blake Murdock combined on pitching a four-inning no hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk. In game two, Tyler Smith, Dalton Ivey and Nolen Fair combined on a two-hit shutout over seven innings with seven strikeouts and two walks.
“William Mitchell and Tyler Smith are probably our top two pitchers, but then we have got a handful of guys we can put out there at any time – Aiden Wallace, Blake Murdock, Alex Prado, DK Williams, Jaxon Morales,” Smith said. “Most anyone on the team can throw. That is one good thing – we have a lot of guys who can throw strikes and give us an inning or two.”
It wasn’t all pretty roses, though, for the Dothan all-stars at state. In the game against Troy, they found themselves down 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth. However, the Dothan squad rallied with four runs to overtake the deficit to claim a 6-4 win.
