Multiple roads were affected, including Van Horn Road, the Mitchell Expressway, Airport Way, the Johansen Expressway, and College Road. DOT brought in extra crews and worked overtime to ensure roads were in good shape for Monday morning. Drivers are still urged to exercise caution as roads remain icy.

According to Danielle Tessen with DOT, this effort involves placing hot sand on the road to thaw the accumulated ice. After that, DOT vehicles pushed the ice to the side of the road.multiple times. Those roads include Van Horn Road, the Mitchell Expressway, Airport Way, the Johansen Expressway, and College Road.

“We brought in extra crew. We had crews working overtime as well as contractor support. We worked 24/7 and so we were able to really set everything up for Monday for folks to get back on the roads and get back to work and schools to continue,” she said.Meanwhile, she said drivers should continue to use caution on the roads.

“In Alaska, when we say the roads are good, that means they’re still slick,” she said, “So when you go out there, you’re still going to want to be cautious and give yourself adequate space between the person ahead of you. We do recognize the roads are in good conditions compared to what they could have been, but they are still icy and there still needs to be caution while you’re out traveling.”
