The DoorDash Dot bot can reportedly fit an extra-large pizza box inside

DoorDash’s food delivery robot, Dot, is operated by the company’s staff on a city road during a demonstration of the service Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Fremont, Calif. The little red four-wheeled delivery vehicle is expected to operate near Fremont’s Downtown and City Center, an area centrally located near a high density of restaurants, apartments and other businesses in the city.

Small-batch cooking hacks for smaller householdsManufactured by Sonic Manufacturing Technologies in Fremont, DoorDash Dot can travel up to 20 miles per hour. It has built-in cup holders and enough cargo space to fit an extra-large pizza and a case of water, according to DoorDash officials. While Dot made its maiden voyage in Fremont at the start of Fremont Restaurant Week on March 5, its official launch in the city isn’t expected until as early as this summer, officials said. Gabriel Ureno, owner of El Rodeo restaurant, said being part of the inaugural delivery services was “really exciting,” and called it “absolutely something different.” “Everybody here was excited for something new here in Fremont,” Ureno said in an interview with this news organization. “I was excited. I’ve never seen that before.” Ureno, 39, said his family-owned restaurant will celebrate three years of service in August. He ventured out on his own to start El Rodeo at 4949 Stevenson Blvd. in 2023 after working since he was 16 years old at his family’s other Fremont restaurant, Cabrillo Park Cafe, which has been at 4949 Stevenson Blvd #L for over 25 years.Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan said in a statement that he is “proud” to partner with DoorDash to bring the new delivery robots to the city. Because they are manufactured in Fremont, he called the technology a “homegrown success story” and a “technological milestone.” “This collaboration reflects Fremont’s leadership in advanced manufacturing and robotics innovation while reinforcing our commitment to sustainability,” Salwan said. “By making it easier for residents to enjoy local dining options, we’re supporting small businesses that form the heart of our community and strengthening the vibrant fabric of our commercial corridors.” Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan retrieves a box of donuts from DoorDash’s food delivery robot, Dot, during a demonstration of the service Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Fremont, Calif. Donovan Lazaro, Fremont’s director of economic development, said the city “is a really good launch pad” for Dot. He said offering the Fremont-made robot service in the city is “unique” and “a great way to take cars off the road and provide another option for our residents.” “For us we see it as a validation that we have been putting the right infrastructure in place to support growth and development in this part of the city,” Lazaro told this news organization. “It is a basket where we are putting a lot of our eggs into.”“We love that these are manufactured in Fremont and it is a continuing of our advanced manufacturing development,” he said. Rauxzen Ballesteros, a DoorDash senior operations associate, told this news organization the delivery bot still needs to undergo some extra programming to learn the city’s roads before the service fully launches in Fremont. But, she said, the company is “aiming for hopefully mid-year to end of year.” The bot is legally allowed to traverse in bike lanes, sidewalks and car lanes with shared bike access, Ballesteros said. DoorDash’s food delivery robot, Dot, is operated by the company’s staff on a city road during a demonstration of the service Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Fremont, Calif. Ballesteros said one of the top priorities of the robot is to fulfill orders from short distances in “dense areas for merchant hubs” that would pay dashers a small tip. She said Dot is not meant to take away DoorDash delivery jobs, but rather to help cover the “last mile” of delivery for customers. It would allow drivers to be able to focus on longer distance orders that would net them a larger tip, she said. The DoorDash bot previously debuted in other cities in Arizona, including Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, and in San Ramon, Calif., according to Ballesteros. Ballesteros said she was not aware of an automated order ever being lost as a result of thieves or vandals. She said DoorDash would “generally refund a customer if that did happen and they did not receive their food.” “Fremont has been great and very excited to get our robot out there,” Ballesteros said. “We’re just trying to get our ducks in a row before we bring our robots out there.” A box of donuts was transported during DoorDash’s demonstration of the food delivery service Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Fremont, Calif.
