Donut Lab says independent test results will go public on February 23 to counter growing solid-state battery skepticism.
Finnish startup Donut Lab announced it will release independent test data supporting its all-solid-state battery after facing criticism at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The company stated initial results will be published beginning February 23, through a video series designed to address industry doubts.
Independent test results to go publicDonut Lab claims its battery has already been independently tested by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. According to the company, detailed findings will be shared on a dedicated website, idonutbelieve.com, built specifically to respond to critics. The startup says it wants to move the debate from speculation to measurable proof.“We are making this series to put measurable evidence in public view so people can separate what’s asserted from what’s verified,” Donut Lab CEO Marko Lehtimaki said in a YouTube video released Friday. “It’s a mind-blowingly big breakthrough that we’re bringing to the market,” he added. The move comes after weeks of skepticism from established battery manufacturers and industry analysts. At CES, Donut Lab presented bold specifications but did not provide live demonstrations, patent disclosures, or peer-reviewed research. That absence fueled backlash across the sector.Lehtimaki acknowledged that the growing skepticism has created challenges for the company, especially when raising the capital required to scale production.Bold performance claims spark industry pushbackSolid-state batteries are widely seen as the next major leap beyond lithium-ion technology. In theory, they promise higher energy density, faster charging, better performance in cold and hot weather, and reduced fire risk.Donut Lab claims its battery delivers 400 watt-hours per kilogram. By comparison, most lithium-ion batteries today range from 200 to 300 watt-hours per kilogram. The company also says the battery can charge in under 10 minutes and last 100,000 cycles. Current lithium-ion batteries typically last between 1,500 and 3,000 cycles. The startup further claims its battery contains no toxic or rare-earth materials and operates over a temperature range from negative 22 degrees Fahrenheit to 212 degrees Fahrenheit.Such numbers far exceed what most solid-state developers say is currently possible. Many of the world’s largest battery makers have publicly stated that production-ready solid-state batteries remain several years away.“Some of the world’s largest battery manufacturers have already publicly called Donut battery a scam, saying that the specifications cannot be true,” Lehtimaki said. “Is that somehow surprising? If years, or even decades of their work, haven’t produced the winning technology, somebody has to explain why. And sometimes denial is the easiest way out,” he added.Motorcycle launch still plannedDonut Lab previously announced that its battery would be installed in a production motorcycle built by Verge Motorcycles during the first quarter of this year. However, the company warned that new customer orders will likely be delivered late this year or possibly next year due to limited initial production capacity. This planned rollout is central to Donut Lab’s credibility. A working production vehicle equipped with the battery would provide stronger evidence than lab data alone.Challenging the status quoLehtimaki argues that resistance from established companies is not unusual when disruptive technology emerges.“It’s human to resist the idea that a group of outsiders changed the game,” he said.He believes Donut Lab’s technology threatens existing business models built around conventional lithium-ion batteries.“No, it’s not a scam. And yes, it will change the industry,” Lehtimaki said. With an independent test data set for release, the coming weeks may determine whether Donut Lab’s claims mark a genuine breakthrough or another chapter in the long and difficult quest to commercialize solid-state batteries.
