More than five months after a Columbus police officer fatally shot Donovan Lewis, his family is expected to file a lawsuit against the officer.
When they went to his apartment on Aug. 30, Columbus police had multiple arrest warrants for Lewis, including a felony charge of improper handling of a firearm, a misdemeanor probation violation and misdemeanor charges filed in connection with an Aug. 10 domestic violence and assault incident involving Lewis' girlfriend, court records show.
Anderson unleashes the K-9 he is handling and the dog turns a corner in the apartment where it appears to encounter a person who audibly expresses surprise. The bedroom door to the apartment can be heard closing. Anderson opened the bedroom door as the other officer yelled"hands" and pointed his weapon with a flashlight at Lewis, who begins to sit up in bed. Within a second of the door opening and the other officer's command, Anderson leans around into the open door and shoots once, striking Lewis in the abdomen, bodycam video shows.
