Managing this conflict, meanwhile, is Doak, who has tried to appease O’Neill while securing as much Koch funding as possible. “He thinks he can just play them off each other and turn it into a bidding war,” said one source, “but realistically I don’t know how much longer [O’Neill] will play that game.” The same source went on to claim that Doak has neglected or fumbled relationships with other high-maintenance benefactors, causing them to either give less or pause donations altogether.
