Trump, however, retook the lead as the state began reporting election-day votes around 8:30 p.m. and never ceded ground. The state would lose its bellwether and swing-state status in 2020, however, when Trump won the state by a comfortable 8% over President Joe Biden but went on to lose the general election.
In a final sign that Ohio lost its spot as a swing state, neither candidate visited the state after the March 19 primary election.
