The president plans to slash annual funding to the World Health Organization from $400m to $40m in line with China's contributions.
The letter continues: ‘Despite shortcomings, I believe that the WHO still has tremendous potential, and want to see the WHO live up to this potential, particularly now during this global crisis.
Last week, German magazine Der Spiegel claimed WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom had been contacted by Chinese President Xi Jinping and asked to withhold information about human-to-human transmission of coronavirus. Announcing the cut in funding at the White House last month, President Trump said: ‘ failed to investigate credible reports from sources in Wuhan that conflicted government accounts and credible reports of human to human transmission in December.The president said that: ‘Everybody knows what’s going on there’ and said WHO blunders had caused ‘Tremendous death and economic devastation.’ Trump continued: ‘Those tasked with protecting us by being transparent and truthful failed to do so.
