Former President Donald Trump campaigned for Republicans including U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Vance Monday ahead of Election Day.
Former President Donald Trump swept into Ohio on the eve of Tuesday’s election to mobilize his supporters and urge them to backTrump spoke to a crowd of roughly 2,000 supporters at Dayton International Airport in Vandalia Monday night. The visit came just hours before midterm elections that will decide which party controls Congress, as well as governors’ offices and state legislatures across the country.
“J.D., you have some very good polls,” he said. ”What the hell am I doing here? We can make this one real short, J.D. Would you like to just do it for a quickie?”Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan. He also used the airtime to go after his opponent, accusing the 10-term congressman of misleading voters about his views. Ryan has presented himself as a moderate throughout the race and criticized Vance for aligning with “extremist” politicians like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who spoke at Monday’s rally.
Like Vance, Trump devoted part of his speech to castigating Ryan, saying the congressman is trying to “jump on the bandwagon” and cozy up to him. Ryan has highlighted some areas where he agreed with Trump, particularly on trade policy, but he’s also a harsh critic of the former president and his allies. While Monday’s rally was billed as an effort to energize Ohio voters for the midterms, it also served as a preview of the 2024 election cycle.
