President Trump appears to back away from stricter gun background checks,
USA TODAYWASHINGTON – President Donald Trump appeared to back away from supporting enhanced background checks for firearm purchases, telling reporters he believes the laws are already"very strong."
"We have very strong background checks right now," he said in the Oval Office alongside Romanian President Klaus Iohannis ."But we have missing areas, and areas that don't complete the whole circle. And we're looking at different things. And I have to tell you that it is a mental problem. And I've said it a hundred times it's not the gun that pulls the trigger, it's the people.
"You know they call it the slippery slope. On Aug. 9, before leaving the White House, Trump said,"frankly, we need intelligent background checks," adding that"this isn't a question of NRA, Republican, or Democrat." Trump also told reporters that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was"totally onboard."
