Don Winslow's gritty new crime novel, 'City of Dreams' follows Irish, Italian cartel families and brings author to Houston

Don Winslow is one of the most accomplished crime novelists of his or any era. He cranks out bestsellers, including his gritty cartel trilogy , and a new trilogy in progress, the second leg of which, “City of Dreams,” brings him to Murder By the Book April 21.

But Winslow insists the upcoming third book in the trilogy, “City in Ruins” , will be his last act of fiction. At 69, he wants to turn his full attention to political activism, including more of the anti-Trump videos he has made with the filmmaker Shane Salerno . With collaborators including Bruce Springsteen and Jeff Daniels, the videos drew millions of online views in the runup to the 2020 presidential election.

If this truly is the end, Winslow, who divides his time between California and Rhode Island, is going out with a cross-country bang. “City of Dreams” follows the further adventures of Danny Ryan, a reluctant Irish gangster on the lam from the Italians and the feds after a series of disasters, including a massive heroin deal gone awry.
