The Australian breaker's eccentric performance at the Paris Olympics prompted a barrage of social media mockery

Life for Dr Rachael Gunn might never be the same again. Her B-girl alter ego Raygun, a 36-year-old would-be break-dancer, inflamed the internet with an Olympic debut best described as unique.

About the issue of her age and the athletic deficit to her rivals she said: “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative because how many chances do you get in a lifetime to do that on an international stage?

“I’m not the oldest B-girl. It’s not about age. I still worked my butt off to try to represent myself the best that I could. These competitions tend to favour a certain kind of breaker but I waned to show the world there are different ways that you can break. Be yourself, be original, be creative. “I guess maybe being a bit older, I know how rare this opportunity is and I wanted to take the chance to wear the green and gold. I don’t know why some of the other girls didn’t want to wear their kit. It was a real moment of pride for me to wear the Australian uniform, I was particularly excited for this shirt to have the Indigenous print on the arms.”
