MLS Commissioner Don Garber on Lionel Messi, promotion-relegation and his own future with the league.

Don Garber hints that his time as MLS Commissioner may be nearing an end saying that the league "needs to have new thinking."champions. The image was a powerful one for a league still aiming to gain credibility around the world and even in its own country as well.

. “We spoke together in English, which was nice. He was emotional, which continues to impress me, not surprise me. He loves being in the league. He loves winning trophies.”has somehow managed to meet every expectation, a feat difficult to fathom when considering just how high expectations were for the 8-timewinner. But as enjoyable as it may be to reflect on what Messi has accomplished in the league, Garber’s eyes remain fixed on the future rather than the past. “I never look back,” Garber said. “You guys know me for a long time. I'm always looking forward. At some point, I'll look back and say, ‘you know, we had the best player to ever play the game in our league while we were on a trajectory to try to make MLS more relevant here and around the world.’” For Garber, that point of reflection may be approaching sooner rather than later. He has occupied the role of commissioner for 26 years but with his current contract expiring at the end of 2027, the 68-year-old knows these could be his final years in charge of the league he’s helped grow. “I think the league is entering the next and most important phase for Major League Soccer's history,” Garber explained. “And it needs to have new thinking. “I haven't made a decision as to what I'm going to do there. But it wouldn't be the wrong time to take a step back and hand what I hope would look at and say ‘thanks, you know, I'm ready.’” One of the marquee issues that the next generation of MLS leadership and ownership will continue to grapple with is that of promotion and relegation. While it is a sporting concept utilized in nearly all prominent soccer leagues around the world, it is one that has never been adopted here by MLS. But is the league’s hardline stance against it beginning to soften? “I made a comment the other day, ‘maybe.’ We'll see,” said Garber, who was then pressed as to whether that meant we might see promotion-relegation become part of MLS. “I don't know what the world's going to look like three years, five years, or ten or twenty years from now,” said Garber. “So why say never?”Austin Beckwith was reported missing again.Austin,29, is nonverbal and autistic.
