The San Rafael college says the federal funding will help it offer more support for undergraduates, high school prospects and potential transfers.
Dominican University of California in San Rafael has been awarded $3 million federal grant to increase access and support for Latino students.
“We will continue to cultivate core partnerships in underserved local communities based on mutual learning and reciprocity, creating robust learning and intentional experiences for students in the community, leading to paid internships, jobs, and ultimately, satisfying careers,” Behmand said. “Dominican currently has 14 integrative coaches,” Ozeroff said. “With this grant, we will add two more coaches to serve Hispanic and transfer student populations, and an additional 10 peer mentors — including student stipends for these peer positions.”
According to Pitchford, Latino residents are the largest and fastest growing ethnic minority in the United States. At the same time, they are half as likely to hold a college degree as non-Hispanic White adults, she said. Britney Gutierrez Calderon, a nursing student at Dominican and the first person in her family to go to college, said the help she received from the university before attending, and for the last two years she has been at the school, has been critical in her success.
