Wisconsin is one of America's most politically divided states in this crucial midterm election year

Charles Yee sits in his restaurant, Emperor's Kitchen, in Brookfield, Wis, on Feb. 23, 2022. He says while the Russian invasion of Ukraine is on his mind his priorities lie in his daily battle with the supply-chain problems, inflation and staffing shortages that continue to cling to the economy. Yee's view echoes in this western Milwaukee suburb, a politically dynamic swath of one of the nation's most evenly divided states. BROOKFIELD, Wis.

In one of America's most politically divided states, Yee is not alone. More than a dozen interviews with voters across the demographic and political spectrum on the eve of and immediately after the Russian attack suggest a broad focus on domestic issues, particularly the economy. While Democrats were often quicker to express concern for Ukrainians, they were also reluctant to become too engaged in an overseas conflict.“But we're really concerned about American citizens first,” he said.

Democrats were more likely than Republicans to think the U.S. should play a major role in the conflict — 32% to 22 % — but were still overwhelmingly opposed. “People should be concerned. And I know it’s far away from us. But it’s really going to be bad. I’m most worried about the children,” said Hintz, who has a 5-year-old daughter and will vote in a U.S. election for this first time this year.
